Tarkwa Nsuaem Assembly Takes Charge of Tarkwa and Abosso Stadiums!

The Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly (TNMA) has officially assumed management of the Tarkwa and Abosso (TNA) stadiums from the National Sports Authority (NSA). To oversee the day-to-day operations, an interim management committee has been established, effective from September 19 to October 31, 2024.

The five-member committee consists of Mr. James Essilfie (Chairman), Mrs. Amanda Pokua Adjei, Madam Rosaline Amoo, Mr. James Bawa, and Mr. Ebenezer Aidoo. According to the committee's terms of reference, they are required to report to the Assembly every Monday during their tenure and are prohibited from renting, subletting, or assigning any part of the stadium without prior approval from the Assembly.

In a press address in Ahwetieso, Mr. Benjamin Kessie, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Tarkwa Nsuaem, criticized the NSA for its mismanagement of public stadiums across the country, expressing concern over the potential waste of significant investments made through the Gold Fields Foundation. He noted, “The NSA's management has been disastrous, with washrooms and critical facilities inoperable within just one month.”

Mr. Kessie emphasized that the TNA stadium was reconstructed by Gold Fields Ghana Limited with Foundation funds aimed at benefiting the local community. He pointed out that the Sports Act, 2016 (Act 934) does not grant exclusive management rights to the NSA for all sports facilities, highlighting the involvement of district assemblies in managing publicly funded sports venues.

“While TNA is not a publicly funded facility, should it be in the future, the Act clearly provides for the District Assembly's involvement in management,” he explained.

To ensure effective and sustainable management of the stadium, the Assembly has developed a comprehensive management plan that will soon be implemented. Mr. Kessie reaffirmed, “To protect the stadium from the mismanagement of the NSA, the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly is taking over management immediately.”
