The Katanga Alumni Association, composed of former students from the University Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), commonly referred to as "Katanga," has distanced itself from a rumored demonstration against illegal mining (galamsey).
The association’s executive council clarified that while they recognize the urgent national issue of galamsey, they have not made any decision to participate in a protest as alleged.
In a statement released on Friday, September 27, 2024, and signed by General Secretary "Fellow" Daniel Kwadjo Teye, the association condemned a social media account created by Jeffery Sackey under the handle "Fellowhood," which has not been authorized by the association.
Sackey, a KNUST alumnus who graduated in 2017 and now lives in the United States, does not hold any official position within the association, and his posts do not represent the views of the Katanga alumni.
The statement urged relevant authorities to address any illegal activities linked to Katanga Fellowhood and its operators.
The association is taking necessary legal measures to protect its reputation from being tarnished.
To clarify, while the association wholeheartedly supports initiatives aimed at safeguarding the environment and opposes its degradation by galamsey, they have not endorsed any events or fundraising activities for this cause.
The statement concluded by advising that anyone who engages with Jeffery Sackey and provides him with funds does so at their own risk.
