Chukwukweike Ashiedu, a 43-year-old electrician, was sentenced to seven years in prison by an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court for indecently assaulting his 17-year-old daughter. Justice Rahman Oshodi handed down the sentence, emphasizing that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The judge highlighted the severity of the case, considering the victim's age and relationship to the convict. He stated that Ashiedu's actions demonstrated a gross disregard for his daughter's autonomy, dignity, and rights to a safe environment, and were both criminal and morally repugnant.
Additionally, the court noted that the full extent of the damage to the girl might not be immediately apparent. Ashiedu was initially charged with defilement, but the court ruled that the prosecution failed to prove penetration occurred.
The crime of indecent treatment of a child violates Section 135 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
