Ukraine Seeks to Use Western Long-Range Weapons Against Russia, But Battlefield Gains Remain Uncertain.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden and possibly both U.S. presidential candidates at the UN General Assembly in New York. This comes amid heightened discussions regarding the potential use of long-range missiles, specifically the Franco-British Storm Shadow/Scalps and U.S.-made ATACMS, in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Zelensky previously secured ATACMS for Ukraine during a visit to the U.S. last year, with the missiles later being deployed in strikes against Russian-held areas. As tensions rise, Zelensky is publicly challenging his allies to support Ukraine’s missile capabilities, particularly following a recent deadly Russian attack. He emphasizes that delays in decision-making result in loss of life.

Experts suggest that while public debate on missile usage may limit their effectiveness, they could still be strategically valuable, especially for targeting military assets deeper within Russian territory. Research indicates that around 200 targets fall within the operational range of ATACMS, which could impact Russian logistics and troop movements.

Zelensky argues that deploying these missiles not only addresses immediate threats but also demonstrates Ukraine's resilience to its allies and pressures Russia to negotiate peace. He insists that long-range capabilities are crucial for Ukraine's defense strategy moving forward.
