"We are on track to settle Trafigura's debt, despite circulating misconceptions," stated the Finance Ministry.

The Finance Ministry has addressed the circulation of a letter regarding Ghana's negotiations with Trafigura, a global commodities trading company. The letter, which emerged on social media on September 24, 2024, has fueled public speculation, with some viewing it as evidence of government inaction on a pending settlement agreement.

In response, the Ministry clarified that it has made the necessary arrangements to fulfill its financial obligations to Trafigura as part of a negotiated settlement. They emphasized that the letter pertains to ongoing discussions aimed at resolving the issue and should not be interpreted as government negligence.

"The Ministry of Finance wishes to state that we have made the necessary arrangements to settle the outstanding claims agreed upon with Trafigura after several rounds of negotiations. We are, therefore, surprised by the circulation of this letter on social media," the statement read.

This clarification follows months of negotiations between the Government of Ghana and Trafigura to address outstanding claims related to a contractual agreement. Trafigura, a significant player in Ghana's fuel and energy sector, is involved in a financial dispute that necessitated careful negotiation to ensure a fair resolution.

The Finance Ministry reassured the public of the government's commitment to settling the claims promptly. “The Government of Ghana remains dedicated to honoring its obligations under the Settlement Agreement with Trafigura to bring this matter to closure,” the statement emphasized. The Ministry also expressed surprise at the letter's leak, noting it was part of ongoing discussions and not a reflection of any governmental inaction.

As the government works toward this settlement, it urges the public and media to refrain from drawing conclusions based on incomplete information and reiterates its commitment to resolving the issue with Trafigura according to the agreed terms.
