WhatsApp will enable users to tag their contacts in status updates.

WhatsApp is preparing to launch a new feature that enables users to mention contacts in their status updates, aligning the messaging platform more closely with Instagram Stories. Currently available to select users through the latest beta update for Android (version 2.24.20.3), this feature is undergoing public testing after several months of development.

With this new functionality, users can tag specific contacts in their status updates, sending direct notifications to those mentioned. This addition aims to facilitate engagement with relevant individuals, inviting them into conversations through status posts.

To tag a contact, users will find a button in the caption bar while sharing photos and videos in their status. Tagged contacts will receive a private notification, and other viewers will not see the names of those mentioned. Additionally, tagged users can reshare the status update with their own audience via a new reshare button, while the identity of the original poster remains confidential.

The introduction of tagging in status updates positions WhatsApp similarly to features on Meta’s other platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook, thereby enhancing user interaction within the app.
