Akua Donkor, founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra. Details of her passing have not been released.
A family member confirmed the news on Tuesday, October 29, stating that she died on Monday, October 28.
Akua Donkor was a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, widely recognized for her advocacy for farmers' and women’s rights. As the founder of the GFP, she captured public attention with her outspoken, grassroots approach.
Known for her determination, Akua Donkor ran for the presidency multiple times, despite facing financial constraints. Having previously contested in two elections, she was listed as the third candidate on the ballot for the 2024 presidential race. Her passing marks the end of a distinct chapter in Ghana’s political landscape.
Her political journey began as the elected Assemblywoman for Herman, with her first attempt at the presidency in 2012 when she applied to run as an independent candidate. However, the Electoral Commission disqualified her, citing eligibility issues. Although she disagreed with the decision, she chose to support Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) instead of pursuing legal action.
In 2016, she was again disqualified after a fire destroyed the GFP’s headquarters in Kabu, Eastern Region, in early January.
