Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a leading activist against illegal mining in Ghana, remains behind bars due to an inability to meet his bail conditions.
The High Court granted him bail on October 16, setting a bond of GH¢20,000 with two sureties. However, despite efforts to secure these sureties, Barker-Vormawor has been unable to secure his release.
Barker-Vormawor was arrested in September alongside dozens of others during a protest against illegal mining activities. He faces multiple charges, including unlawful assembly and offensive conduct.
On Friday, Barker-Vormawor indicated to authorities that he may be able to secure sureties next week. His lawyers are actively working to resolve the matter.
This recent bail decision follows several previous denials, with courts citing concerns about his potential to reoffend. Barker-Vormawor was already on bail for a separate charge when he was arrested.
During the protest, authorities allege that Barker-Vormawor interfered with police operations, including removing keys from a police vehicle.
Despite his legal challenges, Barker-Vormawor remains a prominent voice in the fight against illegal mining, which has had severe environmental consequences in Ghana.
