The Ministry of Education is actively working towards achieving zero tolerance for indiscipline in Ghana's Senior High Schools to address the rising incidence of student violence.
During the 2024 Ghana Teacher Prize event, Education Minister Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum emphasized that measures are being implemented to tackle this issue.
We aim for zero tolerance for indiscipline in our high schools. The days of students vandalizing school property will soon be over. We will collaborate with tertiary institutions to ensure that as students transition from high school to university or training college, they must provide a testimonial reflecting their character. Indiscipline will not be accepted in our schools.
he stated.
Concerns about increasing indiscipline among senior high school students have been a significant topic in public discussions, particularly following a recent incident where a student was fatally stabbed by a peer at O'Reilly Senior High School. There have also been instances of students attacking teachers and vandalizing school property in protests against unfavorable decisions.
Thomas Tanko Musah, General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), remarked,
The behavior exhibited by students today is alarming. They sometimes assault teachers with their parents' support. If these unfortunate incidents are not addressed, they could lead to serious problems in the future.
