The family of Mohammed Zakiu Wumpini, a second-year pharmacy student at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale, is demanding justice after he was allegedly stabbed to death. Wumpini reportedly died on September 25 after being attacked on campus. His body was discovered on September 26 after his family was unable to reach him by phone.
Initial reports indicated a potential armed robbery, as Zakiu’s phone and motorcycle were missing. However, his family claims that his valuables were found intact, suggesting the possibility of a targeted killing rather than a robbery. They noted that Zakiu had informed them he was going to watch football after borrowing a friend's motorbike, but he ended up at the campus.
“He sent me a Snapchat message saying he was in trouble. We became alarmed, but all efforts to reach him were unsuccessful,” a family member stated. They reported him missing to the police and initiated a search, leading to the grim discovery of his body the following day.
In the wake of this incident, Zakiu's classmates have expressed concerns about security at the various hostels on campus. The university authorities have launched an investigation into the matter, and the police have confirmed that their investigation is ongoing.
