Organized labor announces a strike set for October 10 following the expiration of the government's ultimatum.

A significant number of Ghanaian workers may not report for duty starting October 10, 2024, as the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has announced a nationwide strike. This action stems from the government's failure to comply with the TUC's ultimatum to halt all mining activities in forest reserves across the country.

Recently, the TUC outlined three primary demands, including the immediate removal of all mining equipment from forest reserves and areas surrounding water bodies. They also called for the deployment of police and military forces with full authority to remove or destroy any mining and earth-moving equipment near rivers and within forest reserves.

This decision has been prompted by growing public outrage following a series of JoyNews documentaries that revealed the severe pollution of river bodies caused by illegal mining. After a week without government action, organized labor has decided to proceed with the strike.

Joshua Ansah, the Secretary General of the TUC, emphasized that the unions are determined to withdraw their services effective October 10, 2024.
