Road closure from October 3 to October 22 for repairs to the exposed expansion joints of the Atomic flyover.

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has announced a temporary closure and diversion of the Atomic Junction overpass in Accra from October 3 to 22, 2024, for repairs to the exposed expansion joints. The closure will take place daily from 8 PM to 6 AM during this period.

The expansion joint coverings on the Atomic Junction Flyover, which connects Adenta and Madina to Legon on the N4 highway, have been dislodged, creating discomfort and concern for drivers. The sound of vehicle tires hitting the exposed joints on the Legon-Madina Road has raised safety issues.

These coverings are essential for providing a smooth surface for vehicles and allowing for the natural expansion and contraction of the concrete without cracking. Properly functioning expansion joints are crucial for the longevity of bridges, minimizing the need for costly repairs and ensuring a safe and comfortable ride for drivers and passengers.

Although some joints were filled with bitumen, several remain exposed, resulting in noticeable noise as vehicles traverse the overpass. Additionally, an exposed nut, likely used to secure a metal cover, has been observed on the flyover's surface.

In response to these conditions, the Ghana Highway Authority is undertaking repairs and advising motorists to be aware of the upcoming road closure and diversion.
