Three people die, and 15 others injured in a devastating accident near Winneba Junction.

In the Central Region, a deadly accident at Tailer Junction, near Winneba Junction, resulted in the deaths of three people and left fifteen others with severe injuries. The tragic crash occurred when a Toyota Vitz, with registration number GW 907-24, collided with a Toyota Hiace passenger vehicle, registered AW 78-22.

According to D.O.2 Fredrick Adu-Poku, the commander of the Winneba Municipal Fire Service, the accident happened when the Toyota Vitz driver attempted to overtake a tricycle, causing both vehicles to lose control and end up in a ditch.

A video shared by UTV shows the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) cutting through the wreckage of the involved vehicles. The footage reveals the extensive damage to the Toyota Vitz and the O.A. Express truck, which was transporting passengers from Accra to Obuasi.

Commander Adu-Poku confirmed that 15 injured individuals were rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for treatment, while one man and two women lost their lives at the scene. He emphasized the need for drivers to exercise caution, particularly as the festive season approaches, to help prevent further road accidents.

Ghana has been dealing with a sharp rise in road accidents, with troubling statistics underlining the seriousness of the issue. The recent crash at Tailer Junction is just one example of the many tragic incidents on the nation’s roads.

Data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) shows that between January and September 2024, over 13,000 road crashes have occurred, leading to more than 2,400 fatalities and countless injuries.

Reckless driving, speeding, and dangerous overtaking have been major contributors to this alarming trend, especially on major highways and junctions.

In the first half of 2024, road fatalities increased by 10% compared to the same period in 2023. Pedestrians, motorcyclists, and passengers in commercial vehicles have been hit hardest by these accidents. As the country heads into the festive season, a period marked by heavy travel, authorities are urging drivers to follow safety rules and remain alert to avoid more tragic accidents on Ghana’s roads.
