Starting December 1, 2024, Ghanaian kidney patients will benefit from free dialysis treatment, a long-awaited relief from the heavy financial burden associated with this essential medical care.
U Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced that the government will fully cover dialysis costs through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), addressing a critical issue that has impacted many lives.
During a meeting in the Old Tafo Pankrono Constituency, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the government’s commitment to healthcare accessibility, noting that the NHIS, now revitalized after substantial investment, will include this new dialysis support. He highlighted that a successful pilot program earlier this year provided free dialysis to patients under 18 and over 60, paving the way for this nationwide policy.
"This policy will ease the financial pressure on families," Dr. Bawumia stated, expressing optimism about the impact of free dialysis on patient care. His announcement came as part of a broader 15-day tour in the Ashanti Region ahead of the upcoming December 7 elections, where he is rallying support for the presidential and parliamentary elections.
