Nigerian man apprehended for trafficking 50,000 tramadol pills from Ghana to Lagos.

The Nigerian National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted an attempt by a trans-border trafficker to smuggle 50,000 pills of Tramadol (225mg) from Ghana into Lagos.

The suspect, Emmanuel Okechukwu Okeke, was arrested on Saturday, November 16, 2024, after a series of intelligence-driven operations targeting a network of illicit drug traders.

According to a statement from the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, the contraband was concealed in the body compartments of a Toyota Hummer bus belonging to the GUO Transport Company, driven by Okeke. The vehicle was stopped on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway near the Ijanikin area during its journey from Ghana to Lagos.

In addition to this seizure, the NDLEA successfully disrupted multiple drug smuggling attempts within Nigeria and to European countries over the past week. The agency stated that efforts to traffic large consignments of cocaine, methamphetamine, and opioids through Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, to destinations such as the UK, Italy, Turkey, and Qatar were thwarted.

One notable case involved the interception of 13 parcels of cocaine weighing 4.40kg, intended for the UK via Frankfurt on a Lufthansa Airlines flight. The consignment was seized at the Lagos airport’s export shed on November 5, 2024, leading to the arrest of a businessman, Ekeocha Anayo Nelson, on November 8.

As part of its broader strategy to combat drug trafficking and abuse, the NDLEA has intensified public awareness efforts through its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) programme. These initiatives, targeting schools, religious institutions, workplaces, and communities, aim to educate the public and strengthen the fight against drug-related crimes nationwide.
