Ghanaian musician Okyeame Kwame has disclosed that he was approached to serve as Alan Kyerematen's running mate ahead of the 2024 general elections. Alan, founder of the Movement for Change, presented ten criteria for the role, which Okyeame Kwame admitted were appealing.
However, despite the tempting offer, Okyeame Kwame ultimately declined, citing the challenges associated with a political career. He expressed concerns about security risks, the spread of propaganda, and the intense public scrutiny that often accompanies political involvement.
Speaking in an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM, the artist revealed that his decision was influenced by his commitment to safeguarding his family’s well-being.
“So, he [Alan] reached out while I was in Kumasi for an event. I met him, and he outlined the qualities he sought in a running mate. It was flattering—they wanted someone accomplished, and I’ve been in the music industry for 26 years. They also considered personal factors like marriage and family,” Okyeame Kwame shared.
He added, “I couldn’t do it because my children are teenagers. If I were to enter partisan politics, I would need to prepare them for at least a year. I also had to consider the risks—what if false propaganda spread? What if people dug up past issues? I wasn’t sure my family was ready to face such pressure. To protect them, I chose not to proceed.”
Following his decision, Alan Kyerematen selected 40-year-old Elijah Kwame Owusu Danso as his running mate. Elijah, a qualified lawyer and seasoned broadcaster with experience at Pan African TV, also has a unique artistic background in hip-hop music, blending creativity with professionalism.
