President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will inaugurate the newly completed Flower Pot Interchange in Accra on November 19, 2024.
This significant infrastructure project, designed to alleviate traffic congestion in key city areas, was announced by Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, via a Facebook post: "‘Flower Pot’ Interchange to be commissioned by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on 19th November."
Construction of the Flower Pot Interchange began in 2017, undertaken by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Limited at a cost of GH¢147 million. The interchange includes an 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct spanning the Accra-Tema Motorway and the Flower Pot Roundabout on Spintex Road. Key features include ramps and slip roads to facilitate smoother travel.
This includes a ramp from Shiashie leading onto the viaduct towards Airport Hills, another from the viaduct connecting to the motorway toward Tema, and a slip road from the motorway to the Boundary Road Roundabout.
Additional enhancements include a new road through the old East Legon tunnel and a new exit to Cantonments from the Giffard Road Interchange. The interchange is expected to ease traffic in high-density areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema, significantly reducing congestion and improving travel times.
